This IDC study examines a sample of 174 European ISVs that offer software as a service (SaaS), also referred to by IDC as public cloud solutions. The purpose of the study is to analyze and understand how this emerging and fast-growing segment of the European software industry is comprised.

"This study of European SaaS vendors showed that while the SaaS model implies a radical departure from traditional software architecture, development process, and licensing practices, the domain expertise and areas of specialization are similar to those of traditional European ISVs. It shows that the software veterans of traditional software vendors have become SaaS entrepreneurs, and they extend their experience and knowledge in a new software business model," said Bo Lykkegaard, research director, IDC European Enterprise Applications. Lykkegaard continues: "We found that while the SaaS movement has been strongest in customer relationship management (CRM) and collaborative applications, European SaaS vendors have the highest focus on back-office applications."
